Border Collie Spirit – Adopted

Spirit is approx-imately 7 months old. She has the most unusual eyes, that is common in Border Collies, and Aussies, especially the blue merles. You can read more about this unusual coloration on this website: http://en.allexperts.com/e/h/he/heterochromia.htm

Spirit is a high-drive herding dog. We will be working with her over the next few days, identifying her temperament and discussing what home would best suit her needs. She is a small female, however, once our vet examines her, we will determine if she is considered full-grown at this point, or simply very young! Spirit is a very happy female, she gets along with other dogs, and loves attention.

Update 02/07/10: Spirit has been adopted. I’m confident that within a few short weeks, her self-esteem will improve, and her personality will blossom. I’m anxious for updates.

Update: Hey Gisele,

Spirit’s been doing pretty well in her new home. She’s begun trusting me a little more and follows me around the house if she’s not laying down in her crate. She still sulks a little when walking but when she sits she’ll raise her head and perk her ears more often than not.

Her surgery scar is looking fine. No signs of redness or swelling and I’ve been keeping a close eye to make sure she’s not scratching/licking it.

I have’t really exercised her yet since she’s still recovering from surgery but she moves around a little bit when she gets out for the bathroom. I’ll probably take her for a jog in a week.

Thinks are looking good so far and I’ll send you pictures once she gets a good bath in 5 days or so.

Hi Gisele:

Here are a few pictures of Spirit in my kitchen and playing with Ike, my friend’s yellow lab. She’s livened up a whole lot since I last wrote you. She likes playing fetch every now and then, but LOVES to run around town and play with other dogs. In the beginning, she wouldn’t really like to do much, but now if she’s left alone for more than a few hours she gets restless and tears things apart. Normally a problem, but I’m glad she’s gotten more lively and doesn’t lay in her crate as much.

In the pictures, you can see she doesn’t lower her ears anymore and her coat’s gone from dull and ruffled to a little more straight and shiny. She’s also gained weight. She’s up to 36 lbs. now and has been for a few weeks. I feed her more than normal but also exercised her twice a day to give her some healthy weight, not just fat. I’ve had her on Royal Canin for medium dogs and she seems to like it.

Now that I’m settled in at my new base I’ll keep you updated a little more often.
