Because of your donations on Frappe Friday, we were able to sneak this little boy on our transport yesterday, so Thank you!  We estimate he’s between 9 – 12 weeks of age, and he’s a cutie pie.  After careful research, we are confident in telling you he is a Great Pyrenees/Collie boy.  There is a bald spot on his back which may be where someone applied a topical flea preventative… and it burned his hair.

What a gorgeous girl.  She looks like a German Shepherd, but her coloring makes me wonder if there’s a touch of collie in her blood!  This girl is just a baby, still has her baby teeth!  She is shy at first, and loves to hide behind her human.  She needs a confidence boost and a gentle owner to show her the world is a wonderful place!

Do Dogs Remember?

Lady ArabellaOn July 9, 2010, my accountant, Kingsley Shinner contacted me about his mother’s dog.  I’ve known Kingsley since I moved to Deltona in 1989 and every year during tax time, I visited his office.  I had met his parents, and was saddened when I learned that his mother’s health was failing.  Kingsley helped guide me when I created The Dog Liberator, giving me advice and helping me incorporate out business, and put together our Articles of Incorporation to submit our request for non-profit status.  I never dreamed he would need my help.  He told me his mother had a collie, and asked me to find her a home.  From the moment Kelly arrived at my house, my children fell in love with her.  She was a very social and happy girl.  I immediately found a home for Kelly, where she was very  happy, loved, and well cared for.  She was renamed Lady Arabella.

Forgot to mention she is highly skilled!

Forgot to mention she is highly skilled!

Last Monday, however, I received an email from her owner stating that she was in poor health and could no longer care for Arabella.   Yesterday, I drove to Ocala to pick her up.  The last time I saw Arabella was at our 2011 reunion.

Her owner opened the back door of the car, and Arabella, looking a little bit overweight but gorgeous, walked toward me.  It only took one sniff before she recognized me.  She barked and whined loudly, jumped up on me, and showered me with kisses.  She spun in circles with her head up, literally screaming.  Does she remember me?  Her owner said, she did.  “She doesn’t act this way with total strangers – trust me, she remembers you.”  But how could that be?

I drove her home and she cried the minute I stopped the car, and cried all the way to the front door.  Once I opened the door, she immediately greeted Ozzie, Lady Di and China.  Rosie, of course, didn’t want to have anything to do with her!  So what did Arabella do?  She darted down the hallway and went straight to my daughter’s bedroom door, again, crying.  But Sarah is at a friend’s house for a few days.  So, Arabella once again remembered.

I got Arabella situated, and gave her some water, I called Kingsley’s office, making an appointment to see him.  He was not in.  An hour later, my phone rang; Kingsley in back in the office!  I drove just a few miles, and what happened was simply amazing.

My Co-Pilot!

My Co-Pilot!

The moment I opened the door to his suite, Arabella pulled so hard on the leash, I thought to myself, this is a fully trained dog, why is she pulling so hard?  She bolted directly into Kingsley’s office and jumped into his lap.  I don’t think he realized who she was at first, but she knew who he was.  Once again, she screamed with joy, barking at the top of her lungs; the entire building heard  her.  Imagine for a moment, hearing Lassie after Timmy has fallen in the well!  It was that loud.

Kingsley is reunited with his Kelly after 4 years.

Kingsley is reunited with his Kelly after 4 years.

Once a Diva, Always a Diva!

Once a Diva, Always a Diva!

Once Kingsley realized it was her, he was dumbfounded.  You see, his mother passed away shortly after he gave Kelly to me.

But here’s what I didn’t know.  I didn’t know that Kelly would spend her days at Kingsley’s office.  She knew where she was!

Arabella went to the vet, where everyone fell in love with her.  She got her nails trimmed, all of her vaccines, and a heartworm test.  She’s ready for her new home.

Tomorrow will be the beginning of a new chapter for Arabella.  I have promised her that she once again, she will have pretty bows in her hair, boys to play with, parents to love, and she might even get her nails painted.  I have promised Arabella little tiny humans.  These tiny humans might even want to put curlers in her hair.  Something tells me Arabella will be just fine with that!

I believe she will be adopted tomorrow, to her third home; a wonderful family in South Florida.  This family has five children, a one and a half year-old and a 3 year old, as well as, a 13, 15, and 17 year old.  This is a young family who spends their time out by the pool, and going places!  I’m so blessed to be able to give Arabella the greatest gift a rescuer can give –  her forever home.

Later this evening, my Sarah will come home.  I wonder what Lady Arabella will do!  Don’t you?

Going Home!

Going Home!

Update:  My Sarah did come home, and just as I thought, Arabella did remember her!  The next day she was adopted by Angela and her wonderful family!

Update:  The pups are eating now, and it’s time for them to see the vet.  They are still coughing.  We will have them examined and let the vet determine why.

You may have seen us last week begging for donations to rescue three collie pups from Athens, Alabama.  The shelter described them as a bag of bones, and even wondered if they would make it.

I love the ladies!

I love the ladies!

After a few failed transport attempts, they arrived thanks to hard working volunteers!  They are incredibly scared and wouldn’t eat for a few days, but they are eating now.  They are emaciated and they are coughing, so they won’t be ready for adoption… well, until they’re ready!  But we sure can follow their progress!

Spanky is the pup in the middle!  Not the runt, not the largest.  He is also the most social of the gang.  He enjoys affection and attention.  He is not coughing as much, and is eating well.  We will post more photo of them on Facebook shortly.

07/01/14 Update:  Thanks to Laura Burk for taking such good care of our two Athens pups, they are eating, and doing much better. They are not as terrified as they were, and love to be in your lap now!  You can see many recent photos of the boys on Facebook.

They were cleared from the Vet for now, they had shots to help build their strength, and on several medications. Cathy McIlroy will be fostering them for a while, until they can get their boosters and be neutered.

Spanky is Clearly a Collie, his black dot on the tail confirms that! They are very happy to see people, and are very social!

It’s going to take time for them to be totally healthy, and yes, your donations are greatly appreciated. If you can donate toward their care, please visit http://thedogliberator.com/virtual-foster/

3 Collie Pups

Collie Pups at the Pound - They're patiently Waiting. We aren't that patient!

Collie Pups at the Pound – They’re patiently Waiting. We aren’t that patient!

This is what we’re working on.  These two boys, and one girl are in a shelter in Alabama, and we definitely want them.  However we need your help. They have been diagnosed with Diagnosed with Idiopathic vestibular disease with aystagmus. We believe in our heart of hearts that this will go away and it may be a result of being dehydrated, emaciated, or an ear infection.

We have discussed their condition and are symptoms with our vet and our vet gave us the green light to rescue them. They are confident these dogs will recover and so are we.  Think Positive!

We have asked the shelter not to spay or neuter them. We cannot afford for them to be spayed/neutered, have the potential of getting kennel cough which in there delicate state could easily turn into pneumonia. We will not let that happen. We would like to be making chicken stew and we are getting their new foster home, Laura, ready so that we can nurture them back to health.

The Problem?  Transport.  We’re still trying, which is why your vote for the $25,000 Wells Fargo Grant is so important to us.

I spoke with the shelter director last night, and a volunteer this morning.  Both used words I don’t like to hear… “If they make it.”  Again I am told that they are skin and bones.

I hope to have some good news for you soon.  We want to thank you for your donations.  You have donated about half of what we will need for these three tiny pups, but yesterday we didn’t have a drop in the bucket!  We’ll get there!

We have successfully transported these pups!  Thanks to all of the wonderful transport volunteers!  You can get updates on their individual pages.

Florida Bound and Ready!

Florida Bound and Ready!

05/21/14 Update: Before Mother’s Day we posted a request on Facebook for transport from the Atlanta area to Volusia County for little Matthew. We received an offer from Sarah to drive him down! Well, it’s happening right now, but instead of coming to me for fostering, Matthew is being adopted by Sarah’s Dad of Merritt Island!

Her facebook post this morning, all of the photos, and the comments left by waiting friends and family are awesome! Mack has his own fan club! Woo Hoo!

Matthew Saves the Day!

Matthew Saves the Day!

Little Matthew – Hero of the Day!

Last week was a very difficult week for our foster Terri, she had a lot of family business to focus on, and her dog, Solphie was not doing well. After a recent surgery, Solphie was just not herself, so Terri asked me to find another foster for little Matthew. We did. Vicki Truelove, a trainer at K9 Coach said she could help. But there was a catch, Vicki was going out of town. A fellow trainer at K9 Coach, Jen, offered to foster the little pup while Vicki was away.

Since Matthew has been going to K9 Coach everyday with these awesome ladies, he’s learned a lot, and his self-esteem has really increased! Vicki has been texting me updates and videos of him at the center.

This morning, however, Vicki sent me a text I just wasn’t expecting. It read:

Matthew McConaughey saved Jen’s life last night ! Jen is fostering Matthew for us. Her blood sugar went too low and she passed out cold….little Matthew he went to her roommates room, opened the door and started jumping and whining. The roommate could tell the pup was upset.

So she went out to see if he had to potty… He ran into Jen’s room….

Jen says she would not be here today if it weren’t for him! It was bad… – vicki

This simple story of a little foster pup doing a good deed to help his brand new foster Mom is going viral on Facebook!  Everyone is sharing the story!  “Sometimes fostering can be more than just helping out a dog in need.”

We are so proud of little Matthew, and have made today official Matthew McConaughey day in our rescue!  Alright, Alright, Alright!!!!

So of course, it’s only natural for both Vicki and I to ask the question…. could Jen be swayed to change her title from Foster Mom to new Forever Mom?  Check back with us shortly, and we’ll have an answer for you!

Matthew certainly would not be the first TDL Dog that was adopted to help his human.  Jake’s mom is also a diabetic, and adopted him for this reason.  We have adopted dogs to help their quadriplegic human, Aspergers syndrome human, autistic human, to become search and rescue dogs, and to be Canine Good Citizens (like Tim Tebow) and Certified Companion Animals.

It doesn’t surprise me at all.  The Collie breed is incredibly intelligent, sensitive and intuitive.  They may not understand why something is happening, but they know when something is wrong!   I really should start keeping a list!!!

Alright, alright, alright!

Alright, alright, alright!

Alright, Alright, Alright!

Alright, Alright, Alright!

Update:  We just uploaded new photos of Matthew, what an awesome little guy!  Visit his album on Facebook.

Update:  Matthew is all better, switching over to Clavamox did the trick!

Update:  Matthew had a little cough, was put on antibiotics, and got better… all of a sudden his cough is much worse this morning and Terri is taking him to the vet immediately.  Your healing thoughts, prayers, and donations for his care are appreciated.

Alright, alright, alright!  This cute little collie pup was rescued by Terri from Fulton County.  Terri sends me messages daily about her perfect he is.  He is potty trained already!  From what she reports, the dog walks on water!  Amazing, since it’s the first pup she has fostered for us!  He reminds me of little Bart!  He is available in Roswell, Georgia, he has had all of his shots and has been neutered. He’s just waiting for someone to snuggle with!

She hasn’t barked a single time since we got in (although we still haven’t brought strangers over).  After not peeing until about 9pm last night, this morning it was the first thing she did, so I guess she was just a little nervous at first.  She and her brother get along marvelously. In fact, I’ve never see such a playful side of him before.  She gobbled up her dinner last night and her breakfast this morning (laying down).  It was precious.  We absolutely love her and I honestly cannot imagine a more perfect dog.  It boggles my mind that someone abandoned her but I thank god for it because we get to embark on our long journey together as a family, and I am excited for every second of it.    ~ Hofit
