Romeo – Adopted

Waiting for his owner to return

Waiting for his owner to return

Update:  Romeo got adopted yesterday . Family were part of original family/friends and they were cleared by our vet. ~ Nadia

Here’s a twist!  I would love to pull this dog from Citrus County (near Ocala).  But, unfortunately we are full at the moment.  I spoke with Mike yesterday, a shelter volunteer, and I had an idea.  Why not publicize this dog, who is available for adoption, and hope that we can find a match!

Romeo is a six year old Aussie, Golden, Great Pyrenees and/or Collie mix!  We really don’t know what breed he is, but he is stunning and could be a combination of any of these breeds.  I bet if you ask a dozen people to identify his breed, you might get a dozen answers!  He is estimated to be about 73 pounds.

Playful Companion

Playful Companion

Romeo was surrendered to the pound by relatives of the man who owned him.  His owner was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident recently.  Romeo and the cat were both surrendered.  Here’s what we know:

The shelter is making Romeo very nervous.  He has not been exposed to new things, he probably spent his entire life at home, where he belonged, and doesn’t know what’s happening to him.

Mike said yesterday, “Every car that drives up… he checks it to see if that’s his owner coming back.  Every person that walks in, he’s looking to see if it’s him.  He’s a very smart dog, and he’s lost.”

I’ve seen this before in the dogs that we have rescued.  Especially, Jake.  Jake sat and watched through the fence, waiting for his people to come and get him… it broke my heart.

Adopt Romeo from Citrus County Animal Services

Adopt Romeo from Citrus County Animal Services

We know he’s good with cats.

He is slowly being introduced to other dogs.

Romeo needs to be approached slowly, because he is a bit fearful.  He doesn’t need chaos or any sudden movements – so no small children please!

Romeo would prefer to be home with an older couple, and he probably would thrive on routine.

When he was first walked on a leash, he shut down (we’ve seen that before) but now he is more open to walking on leash, and doing much better.

Rome is up-to-date on shots, neutered… the works!  All he needs now is for you to take the time to go meet him and talk to the shelter about adopting him.

Cheerios~Adopted

a perfect gentleman

This young boy was pulled from Miami-Dade by Jackie and his name was Danny.  He and Sunkissed were both pulled from this shelter.  Cheerios is good with other dogs, kids, you name it.  He’s just a young dog waiting to be loved and played with.

Jackie writes:

Hi Gisele,
I have sent you a few photos of Danny so that we can start posting him. He is such a great dog. Extremely friendly and playful. I am not sure what you finally decided to name him. He is with Jessica and should be getting groomed tomorrow. She will be taking more photos of him once he is groomed and sending it to you. His prescription has been filled and he will start his treatment tomorrow. I believe that it is a very minor URI as he had no nasal or ocular discharge and was in great spirits. He is great with adults, children, and other dogs. Because he has a URI he could not be neutered but has an appointment on August 30th in which he will be neutered. Let me know if there is anything else you need either I or Jessica to do.

Jaclyn Duenas

Very attentive and focused

So there you have it.  This young boy is being fostered by Jessica in the Miami area.  He is being treated for upper respiratory which is common in shelter dogs, and will be ready for his new home shortly after September 1st.

More photos of him are on Facebook.

Cheerios was adopted by Becky & Chad.  Here’s their adoption update:

Good evening, Gisele and team!

Cheerios is doing AMAZING! He is such an incredible dog – to say that his “Cheery” personality is contagious would be an understatement!  His smile and attitude toward life are enough to turn anyone’s stressful day completely around!
Cheerios is a perfect blend of innate border collie traits (focus, speed, agility, etc.) and golden affection (from cuddling to the full-body tail wag).  Even in the short time he has been in Tampa, he has already begun to pick up on some of his big sister Gracie’s habits; he is even starting to retrieve frisbees (clumsily, of course – but the idea is there!).  I expect the dynamic between the two of them to be mutually beneficial – and outright entertaining – moving forward.
You may find some pictures of our adventures thus far at this link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qwruth5e4yso9e3/fFbpFNeupN.  <Please let me know if you cannot access the photos and I will send them individually.>
He does still have some lingering, TINY ticks, but nothing unmanageable.  He doesn’t seem to be bothered.  He has an appointment with our vet tomorrow to make sure we are giving him the best care possible!
Cheerios has already made quite a name for himself at the local dog parks in South Tampa… not to mention our neighborhood community!  Others are convinced he is part fox/coyote/kangaroo.  I just know that he is 100% happy.  His name is absolutely perfect.
Thank you again for everything you do and continue to do for dogs like Cheerios.  You are truly inspirational.
We will continue to send updates!

Hopscotch, Loves to Play Outside~Adopted

One awesome little boy!

Ouch!

Foster Update:  If you’re watching us on Facebook, you know that Hopscotch was bitten by a pygmy rattlesnake.  We freaked out.  Thank Goodness Lynne took him to Valuvet in Deltona immediately, and Kurtis was on duty!  Hopscotch has recovered!  He is doing great playing with the other dogs, and he’s a very young pup with a lot of energy.  He needs someone that will speak his language and show him the ropes.  He has incredible focus and is easy to train.  A physically active person would be great for him, as he needs to be worn out daily!  He is being fostered in the Orange City area (near DeLand) by Lynne Flannery.

Foster Update: Hopscotch appears to be insecure and unsure when meeting new people. We are evaluating him while we introduce him to new situations to get more information.

Wanna play?

History: This cute little boy is full of energy, great with dogs, school-aged children, and is adjusting to his new foster home in Orlando very nicely!  Nadia Davis emailed me his photo, and he reminded me a lot of Sunkissed.  We had so many people interested in Sunkissed, that by the way, she was scooped up to Mark Lucas of Soccer Collies and is going through Soccer Collie Training and Certification.  Something we’re VERY excited about.

Hopscotch is fully vetted and neutered and would make a great addition to any family.  He is in the small side, maybe 20 – 25 pounds, he is less than a year old, and he looks like a Golden Collie, doesn’t he?  Without DNA testing, I have no idea what breed he is, but he is stinking cute!

Special thanks to Nadia, Sarah White-Buxbaum and Mariacristina for their help rescuing this pup!

You can see more of his photos on Facebook.

How can you resist this face?

Frankie basically flew out of our rescue.  He was pulled by Jessica and was from Miami Dade.  Jackie told me about Frankie after we rescued Sunkissed.  We believe they were litter mates.

Khan aka Colby the Golden Retriever~RIP

Awesome Family Dog!

Khan (Colby) and his brother, Rufus are six year old Golden Retrievers.  They are both heartworm negative, and fully trained.  They are great with children and small animals.  Both of them spend their day playing in the pond, but have not yet shown an interest in the pool.  A baby pool or a pond for them to play in would be a plus.

These are simply farm dogs.  They run on 2 acres every day, then at dinner time, they are racing into their crates!  They will need to be introduced to their new surroundings and their new homes.

Just add water and stir, these two dogs are awesome family dogs!  They are being fostered in the Sanford/Deltona area.  Email thedogliberator@gmail.com for more information.

New photos of Chaka Khan will be posted in her photo album on Facebook.

09/04/14:

Colby, RIP

Colby, RIP

Gisele:   I hope you are doing well. We adopted Colby from Sandy Shinner through you about 3 years ago. I have contacted her as well. I wanted to drop you a note to thank you for giving us the opportunity to bring Colby (Phoenix) into our lives. He was such a perfect dog and deeply loved. He lived a very happy and full life with us. He loved to fetch balls…and to love and be loved by his humans. He was a wonderful companion for my son, and slept in his room every night. He was love incarnate. I also wanted to let you know that he passed today. His health failed rapidly over the past couple of weeks. It started subtly about 3 weeks ago with 3 swollen lymph glands in his neck. We’d had a similar one removed about one year ago, and it proved to be benign, suspicious for infection, actually. We were planning to have the others removed after a course of antibiotics failed when he began vomiting and losing energy (about 4 days ago). He rapidly deteriorated and ended up with ascites and vomiting bile. In exploratory surgery today he was found to have liver cancer. We didn’t want him to suffer. We had hoped to have him with us for years to come. He was entirely too young, and we are grief stricken…but we feel so blessed to have had him. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Here are a few pictures. I don’t know if you have a Rainbow Bridge portion of your website. If you do and you wish to use any pictures, please only use the first one. We’re trying to keep pictures of my son off the Internet as much as possible.

Best wishes and be well,
Jacintha Cauffield

Rufus~Adopted

Can't Resist that Face!

Rufus is a six year old Golden Retriever, heartworm negative.  He loves to play ball, is crate trained, needs a fenced in yard, adores children, will not harm livestock (he’s carried a live chicken in his mouth without harming it).  He loves to play in the pond but not sure of the pool yet!

These are simply farm dogs.  They run on 2 acres every day, then at dinner time, they are racing into their crates!  They will need to be introduced to their new surroundings and their new homes.

Rufus was called Rusty, and his brother are available for adoption and are located in near the Sanford/Deltona area.  Email thedogliberator@gmail.com for more information.  New photos of Rufus will be posted on his Photo album on Facebook.  Rufus’ brother, Khan is also available for adoption.

If you are interested in adopting, please tell me a bit about yourself. We do not have an adoption application but instead rely upon on interview process. At a minimum, please share such things as

where you live,
household composition,
yard setup and/or exercise plan,
pets you have and/or had,
work schedule and amount of time the dog would be alone,
what contingency plans you have in place should you no longer be able to care for your dog,
if you rent do you have landlord approval,
what you are looking for in a dog, etc.
if you are approved to adopt during your meet, are you prepared to bring your new dog home with you?

The more information the merrier. And there are no “right” answers. Honest! Please include a phone number at which you may be reached.

Thank you again!

Malibu, the Golden BC Pup ~ Adopted

My new foster, Malibu, is a golden boy in more ways than one!

First off, we believe him to be a Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix. He has the long, lean build of a Border Collie with the coloring of a Golden Retriever. His coat is a golden reddish brown with a kiss of white on the chest, feet, and tail tip.

Long and lean like a Border Collie.

Secondly, we think Malibu’s just as good as gold, personality-wise, especially for a youngster newly sprung from the shelter! He’s friendly and playful with both people and other dogs. Malibu is just energetic enough to be fun, but not over-the-top in any way. Intelligent and eager to please, he sits on command and waits patiently when told to “stay.” He is very food motivated and just loves his “cookies.” Malibu also does well in his crate, especially when he has a yummy frozen beef marrow bone to occupy his time. He walks pretty well on a leash, but we’re working on doing even better. This boy is smart, so I know it won’t take long.

Oh, and did I mention Malibu’s a talker? It’s the funniest thing: He’ll sit outside the sliding glass door and “talk” to me in a series of grunts, whines, and grumbles. He’s not barking — I honestly believe he thinks he’s telling me to let him in! lol

"Take my photo, please."

Now for the particulars: Malibu is 10 months old and weighs approximately 30 lbs. We anticipate that he’ll grow a little more and fill out some, probably finishing up at around 35 lbs. or so. He has been fully vetted, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. All that’s missing is the loving forever home that has yet to find him!

Malibu is being fostered at my home in the Ocala area. To view additional photos, visit his Facebook photo album. If you think you may be interested in adopting Malibu, please review our Adoption Process and e-mail me at amyb.thedogliberator@gmail.com.

I couldn't resist adding this photo.

Nov. 16, 2011: Guess who likes to go biking? Okay, so he doesn’t actually “bike” per se, but Malibu loves to run alongside while you pedal. I imagine he’d be a great running or jogging partner. He’s also great with kids. We went to the local park in the hopes of getting some cool photos on the playground. Unfortunately, tonight the park was hosting the local kids’ soccer league, so we didn’t really get any photos. But we did meet lots of children and Malibu loved them! Suffice it to say that our boy would do well in any family, no matter what its composition. Yay!

Nov. 20, 2011:ADOPTED! Malibu just left with the wonderful Dan and Joan DeRango and their daughter, Raleigh, and I couldn’t be happier! Unfortunately, my camera was not cooperative today and all the photos I took are completely washed out. Not to worry, though: Raleigh had her iPhone on hand and promised to e-mail the photos she took with it. Maitland, welcome your newest Dog Liberator dog!
