Wanna Play?

Serena Williams-Ready to play!

Wanna Play?

I had never met Serena. She was scheduled to die at a shelter I had rescued Huckleberry from. It was another one of those nights…picture after picture of sad, scared, precious dogs came across my Facebook. Every now and then I have a day where I freeze up. Who do I save? I only have one or two spots available in foster homes and there are so many, I can’t decide. The pressure is unbearable. Sometimes I just have to close my computer and pray.

I was just about to do that when one of the volunteers for Clayton messaged me. “This girl is so sweet and so full of life, can you please save her? She is scheduled to die in a few hours” Sadly, I responded that I could not get there by 8am, which is the deadline. Another volunteer sent me a message “Can you please save this girl she is so sweet, just wants to be loved and noticed! She is so sad when you walk away!”

Amy and the other volunteers are so great at this shelter. They care so much for the doggies and work so hard to get them out.

If my foster Dawn will take her and if someone can get her for me in the morning, I’ll take her. I felt like Serena had these Angels watching over her, so my decision was made.

It only took a few minutes til Amy said, “I will get her in the morning and take her to the foster!”
I sent her sad shelter pic to Dawn and asked her to foster, she said yes.

The next morning before 8am, Amy sends me a picture of Serena in her car and free of the shelter. Dawn was driving to meet her. The next pics I get are of Serena at Dawn’s house with a tennis ball in her mouth. Her name immediately became Serena Williams. I still hadn’t met her.

The vet appointment for her spay was set up right away. When Dawn picked her up from her surgery we were hit with the news that she was heart worm positive. I wasn’t surprised, she was not spayed, picked up stray, and no one came for her….naturally, they didn’t protect her from heart worms.

Serena is so happy at her fosters, plays, and her foster reports very smart! I finally was able to make the trip to meet this girl that I had saved from death thanks to 2 angels who spoke for her. She is so beautiful in person and so full of life. She has learned the routine at Dawn’s house, learned obedience commands, plays with all the dogs. She quickly became crate and house trained even though she had never lived inside before. Dawn reports she loves being inside now and comes in right away if the weather isn’t just right.

Serena is a mid to high energy girl. She would love a family that is active and will play with her. A good game of fetch in the yard, a hike with the family or a jog with her person, and end the day cuddled in front of the fireplace with her chew bone would be a good day for Serena. She would love another dog to play with and share her love of playing ball.
