The Dog Liberatorâ„¢

The Dog Liberator rescues abandoned dogs throughout the Southeast. Based in Central Florida, this non-profit organization fosters all of their dogs in a home environment. Founded in 2009, all dogs are fully vetted, spayed or neutered prior to adoption. The Dog Liberator focuses in rescuing the herding breed, which consists of Border Collies, Shepherds, Sheepdogs, Aussies, Collies, and Deaf/Blind Dogs.

Smores is renamed Toby and Goes Home for Christmas!

Smores, that’s right! My son named this gorgeous hitchhiker Smores. Why not? Who wouldn’t want one! He’s an absolute doll, and a perfect example of everything a Border Collie should be. Smores will be fully vetted and neutered soon, but until then, we’ll be getting lots of hugs and kisses, they’re called Perks!

I would NOT name him Chris. After a few minutes, we named him Smores!

Update: I took Smores in to meet Doc Wayne because I was worried about Trixie’s cough. Not knowing what vaccines Smores had received, I wanted to be double sure. Well? One look at Smores and Doc Wayne convinced me that Smores needed a foster! She immediately vaccinated him, and gave him his bortetella (spelling) and handed him to vet tech Lucy and said “BATH”. No doubt he will receive the best care, he will enjoy himself, and she will watch over him, and make sure he stays healthy. So I guess we can say that Smores is simply Irresistible?

Update 12/23/09: There were many people interested in Smores. People sometimes see a photo of a pup, they fall in love, and say, “I want him!” but that doesn’t mean that it’s a good fit. Bringing a dog home because it’s beautiful may not always give you the results you had hoped for, but let’s face it, we’ve all done it – including ME! Adopters that wanted a smaller dog who were mesmerized by Smores were denied. We had several people with plenty of land, herding enthusiasts, and agility experts who expressed an interest in Smores, but for reasons unknown, the adoption transaction never took place. No worries, there is no shortage of working Border Collies these days. Smores could have also fit in well in a home with several dogs, and would’ve been very happy to be part of a pack, but I had something else in mind for him.

After we experienced the adoption of Augustus #806 (Charlie), I had hoped that the right family would come along, and scoop up Smores. The Bryant family provided me with the ultimate family model for those special pups that can make a family whole again – those families that have suffered the loss of their dog. Smores was one of those dogs that could give much joy to a family for many years. The dynamics of a large family proves that each family member has different needs and desires – yet one good dog can provide them with the love, companionship, protection, and fun playtime – that’s what a good dogs do!

Smores was one of those dogs – He had that magic.

On Tuesday evening, 12/22/09, I received an email from Michael Guyette. The email was a brief introduction, describing his family, and the loss of his much loved Tuxedo. Tuxedo was beautiful Border Collie who was rescued from a shelter at the age of 6 weeks, and who had recently passed away at the age of 16 1/2 years this past August. The family was ready to love again, and they had recently started looking for the perfect dog.

We played the rapid fire email exchange throughout Wednesday, and I had a match.

They drove from Ponte Verde Beach to Deltona.

They minute they stepped out of their vehicle, I knew that Smores had found a dream home. They met Jet, Chelsea, and my Ozzie and Lady Di greeted them, but once I brought Smores out, tucked under my arm, the sighs, screams and squeals told me I was done!

Serena and I stood back and watched as this family huddled around Smores and I confidently left to gather all of the adoption paperwork.

Smores is now called Toby, but we might always call him Smores! We’re all looking forward to updates and photos, because we all fell in love with Smores, and we all wanted to keep him… but there’s a rule in rescue, “Thou Shalt Not Hoard!”
I’m hoping that it won’t take long for the Guyettes to know what I know. Toby will need a playmate really soon! Here’s a photo of me (very rare) saying my final goodbye to a very special pup. It took so many people to rescue him, transport him, care and foster him, vet him, yet it’s all a gift isn’t it? A gift that we give to each other for the dog – that ultimately becomes the greatest gift of all – HOME.

Adoption Update. Two is a charm! The Guyettes returned with Toby in tow, and adopted Ranger! Whoo Hoo! What fun their house is going to be now! To read about Ranger, click here.

Here’s a great Toby Update Photo!

September 28 Update: We have moved to Atlanta and our new home has a very large backyard that is fenced in with lots of trees. The boys love to chase squirrels and they both are doing very well. I attached a recent photo for you. I hope your rescuing continues to be successful.
