The Dog Liberatorâ„¢

The Dog Liberator rescues abandoned dogs throughout the Southeast. Based in Central Florida, this non-profit organization fosters all of their dogs in a home environment. Founded in 2009, all dogs are fully vetted, spayed or neutered prior to adoption. The Dog Liberator focuses in rescuing the herding breed, which consists of Border Collies, Shepherds, Sheepdogs, Aussies, Collies, and Deaf/Blind Dogs.

I was tagged in three photos of gorgeous Border Collies from Gordon County.  I liked them all!  What’s a girl to do?  I sent out a plea for more fosters, not knowing how many dogs will be adopted by the time they get here… but how will they get here, who will help, and when?  I have no clue.  Remember, Rescue is an Effort, Not a Science!  I was thrilled to receive an update that one of the dogs had been adopted!  Whew!  Then it was transport day!  Not only did Vicki Truelove find a volunteer pilot with Pilots-N-Paws for Holly’s new Puppies, but Anita, yes our Anita was leaving Tennessee and driving back to Florida.

Stunning

Still, I had no room for these two.  Disappointed, everyone let out a heavy sigh, knowing we were leaving them behind.  Vicki called me early Saturday morning, “Please, we have air transport and car transport, can’t we get them out?”

I know that I have no where to put them, and because they are fearful, they will need a special foster home.  But Vicki was right, so I thought maybe, just maybe, I can make this work.  I called Aloma Jancy, and then contacted Kim (Dudley’s Mom) and asked her how late someone would be at the Clinic?  “We close as midnight,” she said.  I called Anita asking for her ETA.  “Eleven-ish.”  Now that’s what I call cutting it close!  I decided to try… just go for it!

Wyatt and Kathy Keith

Kathy Keith, was at the shelter to pick up Holly’s pups.  She went into the kennel run to meet the two boys, knowing she was leaving them behind.  With pups in hand, she went to exit the shelter, she stopped at the doorway and waited…. waited for her phone to ring, and it did ring.  Sherrie Ford told her I wanted the two boys.  What did Kathy do?  Laugh the entire time… I guess being laughed at is a good thing!  She turned around, and told the shelter we were taking them.  Needless to say, they were very pleased.

I think Anita and I called each other every few hours, checking in.  At 11:49 PM Anita sent me a text indicating that they were safe at the Clinic!

the Ultimate TDL dog

Both Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday were surrendered by their owners.  They had been working on herding, and their owner showed the shelter how well trained they are, sharing numerous tricks that they had learned.  It was a difficult thing to do, but they simply had too many animals.  That’s something we hear a lot these days.  People who used to be able to afford animals, just can’t afford it anymore.

The sad part is how unsocialized and fearful these two dogs are, but every TDL person they meet, they slowly open up and trust.  The shelter life is not in their best interest, now is being boarded at the clinic.  As soon as they can be groomed, vetted and neutered, we’re getting them out there.

So afraid, he hides under the car

Wyatt and Doc need to be exposed to new things, one day at a time.  This is something TDL is really good at, for example, in the case of Shy Shannon, Nutella, Spock (Bailey), China and dozens of others who just needed someone who was patient, who could provide them with routine, good food, attention and reward.  Dogs do live in the moment, and it won’t take long at all for these two so become excited about the world that awaits them!

But wait, there’s more.  Yesterday, I alerted an Aloma Jancy volunteer, Jennifer Derviss that two BC boys were on their way.  Today, she and Christopher Murphy visited the boys, and took some gorgeous photographs of them.  But now that I review their photos, I see something that I didn’t see before.  I see Courage, one of the most beautiful Border Collies we’ve had in our rescue.

I want to thank literally, dozens of people who made all of this work.  Very soon these two brothers will know how special they really are to all of us.

09/29/11 Update:  The boys are ready! Mel & Kevin have exposed them to the dog park, the groomer, doggie daycare and the vet! They are socialized, playing with the pack, and doing great. However, Kevin is going to hold out until they can be adopted together. I can’t blame him. After he had to choose between Saffron or Sage (The Spice Girls) he couldn’t, and adopted them both. Yes, it will happen, and we’ll wait for their day to find the right home!

Special thanks to Mel & Kevin Scott who took these boys into their home, and turned them around… in one week!  Their transformation has been amazing.  See for yourself in the video below.

Going Home Together!

10/13/11 Adoption Update:  Adopter Update: Rick and Cyndi just let us know how the boys’ first night went! For starters, their new names are Boone (FKA Wyatt Earp) and Dock (FKA Doc Holiday), together they are the BooneDocks of DeLand!! Gotta Love That! They sent us a bunch of pictures from their first night, which have been posted in their album! And they let us know that their first night went perfectly! We knew when Dock and Boone left that they knew they were in good hands! They didn’t even look back! The car ride HOME was amazingly easy, and once they got home they spent most of their time checking out all their new surroundings, and LITERALLY dancing in the moonlight! I am so happy for these boys, and for Cyndi and Rick! I know they are going to be the perfect family together! Now I just can’t wait to see them again at the reunion! – Kevin
