Betty’s Raw Food Diet

Betty Acosta stays busy feeding all of her dogs the raw food diet, here’s what she wrote:

I feed my dogs at home 3% of their body weight. Now If I have a dog that weighs 50lbs but I need him to be at 40 lbs, I’ll feed him 3% of 40 lbs (desired weight)

He was weighed in at 50lbs 1 month ago and needed to be at 45 lbs. I started to feed him 3% of 45 lbs. If you multiply their weight in ounces, it much easier to figure out how much to feed. Just multiply their weight or desired weight by 16 (16 oz = 1 lb). So in Dukie’s case 45 x 16 = 720oz. Then I multiply 720 x .03 = 21.6 (I round it off to 22oz) which is equal to 1.375 lbs of food per day (round it off to 1.4 lbs).

(Obviously Betty thinks I’m good with math, which I am not!)

So this is how I set it up:

Menu for Dukie (1.4 lbs of food)
Along with everything on the menu, I feed a whole egg with shell, (2) vitamin E capsules, (2) vitamin C capsules and (2) fish oil capsules

Monday – 12 oz. Chicken leg quarters or breast
8 oz. of Beef and pork neck bones
2 oz. or sardines, salmon or jack mackerel

Tuesday – 12 oz. of Chicken and Turkey (mix it up)
6oz of ground beef
4oz of sardines, salmon or mackerel

Wednesday – 10 oz of chicken necks or backs
8oz of pork neckbones
4oz of turkey necks

Thursday 16oz of Chicken leg quarters
4oz of beef
2oz of sardines

Friday 12oz of chicken necks or backs
8oz of beef liver, heart or checken gizzards
2 oz of sardines

Saturday 16 oz of turkey necks, drumsticks or wings
6 oz of ground beef and pork neckbones

Sunday 12oz of chicken leg quarters
6 oz of ground beef
4oz of sardines, pink salmon or jack mackerel

There are many times that I don’t go exactly by the menu since it becomes very time consuming when you start weighing everything. Once you start them on the diet, you’ll begin to get the hang of it and pretty much be able to calculate how much to put into the bowl just by looking at it. It does not have to be perfect. You can also feed raw veggies like broccoli. I stopped giving it to my dogs about a year ago because it was making them very gassy – lol
